Artist and Jewelry Designer: Lorraine Pennington

I love the look and feel of artist  and jewelry designer Lorraine Pennington‘s work.  Solid and earthy, pleasing textures and mysterious imagery all add up to…beauty.   Lorraine searches for a balance between color and texture.   She applies many layers of paint and will scratch, sand, and wipe away to reveal what lies beneath the surface of her artwork.  Lorraine is drawn to  “wabi sabi,” the art of the imperfect, and  finds it is often revealed in her jewelry designs and artwork.

I had the pleasure of meeting Lorraine through her fab blog, 2BMODERN.  Lorraine’s work is also featured on her website, Modern Surfaces Art Gallery.

Smile

This image makes me smile.  My middle name is ‘wrong way.”  I wonder if map heels would wash away this curse…probably not.

Hiroko Koshino

I am  in awe of the uber-talented Japanese fashion designer Hiroko Koshino.  Hiroko is highly regarded in the fashion world as a pioneer of reinventing traditional Japanese dress.  While her contemporaries favor the avant-garde, Hiroko creates wearable clothes based on ceremonial wear updated with more volume, natural materials, and assymetric designs.  Her hallmark is the modern reinterpretation of the kimono as well as gorgeous textiles and prints of her own design.  Hiroko paints; she owns a gallery; she is considered a master of calligraphy; and she plays the Japanese three-strings guitar.  You know, I guess when you’ve got it, you’ve got it…

Tadao Ando designed Hiroko’s Tokyo home, his first private project.

Time Out

I will meet you tonight at The Curve Theater.  Curve is a theater turned “inside out”, where production, construction, craft, and technical components are exposed to public view and integrated into the experience fo the street. By dissolving the distinction between production and performance, the building extends the theatrical arts into the public realm and makes them more accessible.  Located in Leicester, United Kingdom by Rafael Vinoly Architects.  See you at 8:00 sharp.
