Time Out

I love the projects coming out of Poland.  The Zmianatematu cafe by xm3 is no exception.  If you would be kind enough to join me, we are off to Lodz today for a friendly cup of coffee.

Light fixtures hang down between curved plywood ribs…

Patches of plaster are intentionally left unfinished…

It’s still too early in the day to spice things up, yes?

Step up to the bar and let’s order…

Bubbles

Italian architects Pietro Bagnoli and Franco Tagliabue converted a former office building into the Zona K studio, which can be used for events and exhibitions as well as for drama rehearsals and performances.  The ceiling of the drama studio in Milan is imprinted with inverted bubbles that house both spotlights and skylights.

The Zona K studio ceiling reminded me of these fabulous images I came across awhile ago.  “Photographer Emmanuel Coupe is a participant in the 2011 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest for this photo of a frozen lake in Canada.   Spotting frozen bubbles on the lake is rare and never appear in the same place twice.”  On a hot and humid day in Chicago, I thought we might find these images not only beautiful, but refreshing…

Bachelor’s Retreat

This beautiful forest retreat was designed by Olson Kundig Architects and is located in the North of the San Juan islands within the Salish Sea. It is a single room cabin, meant as a getaway for a bachelor.  I think it would work well for a woman, too.
