Breath of Fresh Air…

…during a long Chicago winter, it can seem as if the four walls of your home are closing in on you.  No chance of this happening near Stockholm, Sweden, where Arrhov Frick Arkitektkontor designed Six Walls House.  The architects gave the homeowner two extra walls plus floor to ceiling windows, which allow an abundance of light even on the gloomiest of days.  The home’s location gives generous views of the sea and surrounding nature…giving a feeling of serenity…a breath of fresh air…

Made to Be Moved…

…I like the idea of moving walls in a space…but transporting an entire building is truly the height of flexibility in the choice of preferred location.

Made to be Moved is a minimalist building located in Nordhavnen, Denmark, designed by Arcgency. Worn-out shipping containers are stacked three stories high on a series of minimal site impact pillars. The container is a super optimized product, refined to be cost-effective, strong and durable. It fits international transportations standards and can be shipped and set up anywhere, enabling the architects to practice direct reuse. If a new building component with the same specifications were to be designed, it would be both expensive and time consuming.

Iridescent…

…designed as a living organism in constant interaction with its environment…Butterfly House by Hong Kong based design team, Davidclovers.  The guest house is conceived as a preternatural, brilliantly colored form that oscillates between sheer camouflage and sparkling beacon with the northeastern Pennsylvanian woods.

Boreal Halo…

…The Muzeul National de Arta Contemporana, located in Bucharest, Romania, is the temporary home of the Boreal Halo by French artist Vincent Leroy. Inside the Grand Palace, the Boreal Halo casts a mesmerizing, hypnotic trance over the room. The mass of the object creates an interesting contrast to the stark solidity of the marble floors, striking a tense balance that gives the structure a sense of lightness.

Moving Mountains…

…The idea of moving walls in a dwelling or work place is a practical use of space.  Rearranging our environment as we see fit is equivalent to moving mountains.  Wall Cloud was devised by Sasaki Architecture for a former waterfront warehouse in the Minato district of Tokyo that operated as a popular disco called Juliana’s Tokyo in the early 1990s. “The attic part of the former discotheque on the second floor remained untouched for a long time, since it had a low ceiling height, causing an oppressive feeling in the space,” said the architects. To increase the ceiling height, the designers removed the existing false ceiling and added sections of wall under the beams to segment the space into individual offices.
