Guest Post: Design Elements

My friend, Maria, from Design Elements is visiting today.  I’m sure many of you are aware of Design Elements and the incredible architect and designer interviews that Maria manages to arrange.  If not, please stop by and indulge…you will leave inspired, informed, and happy…yes, happy…Design Elements…always en vogue.

Oh my! It is wonderful to be part of cabbagerose today. I feel quite lucky to have “met” Katherine as I admire her unique way of looking at design and life. Since cabbagerose is one of my favorite virtual places to hang out, I have decided to take you on a little getaway to another favorite place: the sail-shaped W Hotel in Barcelona designed by the Spanish architect Ricardo Bofill. Enjoy!

The Edge Effect

While hiking and driving the areas in California’s Joshua Tree National Park, where the low Sonoran desert meets the high Mojave desert, Daniel Kukla caught glimpses of the border space created by the meeting of distinct ecosystems in juxtaposition, referred to as the Edge Effect in the ecological sciences. To document this unique confluence of terrains,  Daniel hiked out a large mirror and painter’s easel into the wilderness and captured opposing elements within the environment. Using a single visual plane, this series of images unifies the play of temporal phenomena, contrasts of color and texture, and natural interactions of the environment itself.

Natural Production…

…enter Barcelona designer,Victor Castanera, and The Areniscos project.  Victor visualizes an alternate production and creation model within the parameters of our natural habitat where he explores how nature can move us to create a sensorial, sustainable and experiential process.  The vision inculcates the possibility of growing a small industry that permits the simple creation of a series of products taking advantage and leveraging nature in its simplest forms, without damaging it in the process. No machines, no contamination, only a small amount of resources are needed to create the product. This industry will not only highlight the product but also the process and philosophy of natural production…just pure beauty.

Nature + Glamour

I spotted this ‘splendid’ home over at Kat & Muse…had to show you…the Kitzbuelhel Mansion in Tyrolia, Austria by Splendid Architecture.  A touch of glamour is expressed in lighting and reflective surfaces, but the layout and placement of glazing throughout the facade is meant to celebrate the nature that surrounds the home. Thanks, Kat…
