Mirrored

New York firm REX have completed two office buildings in Istanbul, Turkey, where one is built inside the other. The design was created for two Turkish sister companies: fashion house Vakko, and television and radio company Power Media. The Vakko Fashion Center and Power Media Center transformed the abandoned skeleton of an unfinished hotel project in Istanbul to create one of the most significant new additions to Turkey’s contemporary architectural landscape.  The original concrete structure couldn’t be hidden so it was clad in glass to permit views through to the inner building, made up of stacked mirrored boxes. Very cool.

Time Out

How would you like to spend the day together?  Let’s make some mischief…

let’s jump in the car…

and enjoy a bit of retail therapy…

…and a tasty treat…

we’ll swing by the office to check on things…

stop and buy flowers and head back to my place…

you arrange the flowers…

and I make dinner.  So lovely to have you.

Confident and Sculptural

Hotel Domplatz Linz by Hohensinn Architecture is located next to the neo-gothic Mariendom cathedral of Linz which is the largest church in Austria.  The new hotel is a modern building which ‘ floats’ above the square.

Ant Farm House/Xrange

Xrange, an architectural firm located in Taiwan, created Ant Farm House.   To preserve an existing indigenous stone house, xrange wraps a new layer of high living spaces around it to create an “extreme” new house of outrageous proportion.  The form strategy creates a “found interior” for the new house from the “internalized exterior” of the old house.

Wanted

I would like this meditation platform from D\ZEN Furniture by CTRLZAK.

“In the past it is probable that these sticks were placed beneath the stones by monks and had sutras carved on them. The exact original meaning of this folk tradition is unclear, although it could be the expression of a request, a vow, or a testimony. Although the different forms of Buddhism have diverse practices, this specific one is unusual. It is certainly a gesture within the Zen spirit, which has been the foundation of this project’s creative process. It also followed Zen principles of slow and fast, movement and stillness, transformation and balance; above all an open process with open results which aims to be nothing more than what it is. D\ZEN’s balanced volumes are inspired by a rare combination of nature and man’s respectful intervention. They are archetypal forms that sustain objects and people, imperfect forms in perfect balance. Throughout the long development process the importance was placed in conveying the essence of nature and the balance of things. The stick is man’s little touch, which supports nature but reminds us that everything is temporary”.

Wish Upon a Star

Countryside Home in Salento was created by Italian architect, Luca Zanaroli.  Charm and whimsy abound and minimalist furnishings draw attention to the restored barrel vaults and domes constructed with locally sourced stone dating from the late 1800s.  Life is beautiful in Salento…
